Bamboo Fencing
Bamboo Fencing Tips
If you are looking for a decorative wooden fencing alternative, bamboo fencing might be what you are looking for. Bamboo fences come in different but equally attractive forms and can be installed in a variety of ways. They are flexible and versatile, meaning they can be fashioned in any which way to suit your preference and your garden space. Bamboo fences are environment-friendly. However, they may not be the best choice for areas where it snows or rains often.
Bamboo fence panels are readily available commercially. They can be purchased in various sizes and designs. Some panels are purely made of bamboo while others have wooden frames. As an alternative to bamboo panels, there are other options when it comes to bamboo fencing. Instead of solid fencing, homeowners may wish to have living bamboo hedges, privacy screens, or windbreaks around a specific area.
Bamboo hedging involves cultivating any bamboo specie that is not too tall; just enough to provide a neat-looking hedge around the targeted area. Preferences in height, color, density, and leaf size vary. Privacy screens are similar to hedges, only they are taller and look more casual.
Installing your own bamboo fencing is not that difficult if you have basic construction skills. The essential thing is to take all the right measurements before you plan the design and buy the needed materials for the fence. You should also remember that bamboo canes are not uniform in all aspects so you need to be careful. This characteristic, however, also has its advantages because it makes bamboo easier to work with in some ways.
• Watch out for the position of joints, straightness, taper, color, and cracks. These would seem minor but can affect the quality of your bamboo fencing.
• Choose round fence posts. It would be better if your posts are made of pressure-treated hardwood, which are more resistant to rotting and decay. Hardwood posts will improve the longevity of your fence.
• In cutting the bamboo canes, use a fine-blade hacksaw. Try cutting vertically or diagonally above the joint at the top of each cane to prevent the accumulation of water.
• When driving nails into the canes, avoid cracks by pre-drilling holes in places where nails are to be driven. Drill holes that are slightly bigger in diameter than the nails. Take extra care in using the hammer. You may also use a nail driver or a nail gun.
• You may have your bamboo fencing treated with oils, such as hemp, and petroleum-based preservatives to make them last longer.
• Remember that as your fence ages, you can expect it to change in color, sustain cracks, and expand in specific areas. These ageing signs do not necessarily mean that your bamboo fence is not as strong as it used to be.
Bamboo fencing gives any garden a tropical or Oriental look. Fence panels are the easiest way to have bamboo fences around your home. You may want to do more research on the different species of bamboo to be able to choose the best one for your home.
