The proper type of steel fence posts is important in setting up a chain link fence. Chain link fences are popular for commercial and residential use because they are easy to install and they can last for as long as you need them. Steel posts support the entire structure of a chain fence and thus, must be planted firmly into the ground to ensure that the fence can withstand strong winds and not just topple over. A steel fence post is also referred to as a star post, a T-post, or a Y-post based on its configuration.

To mount steel fence posts, all you need is to do is follow simple procedure and some basic tools. It is important to give the whole installation process proper attention to make sure that everything fits perfectly into place. Some steel fence posts are made using durable rail steel. Fence posts made of steel can support several types of wire mesh or chain link fence. They may also be used for wooden fences or simple wire fences.

Fence posts are driven deep into the ground using a manual or a pneumatic post pounder. As an industrial standard, metal fence posts including steel come in varying lengths of between 5′ to 10′, even longer. When choosing the proper length of a steel fence post, bear in mind that at least one-third of its entire length will be implanted beneath the ground. Along the spine of steel fence posts, you will find nubs designed to secure the barbed wire or a chain link fence.

Fence posts may be held down onto the ground using dirt, concrete, or gravel. Metal fence posts make great line posts or as fence framework. However, depending on the type of fence you are erecting, they sometimes need to be used with wooden cornerstone posts, which need to be at least eight inches. Cornerstone or terminal posts serve as the backbone of a fence structure. You may also use steel fence posts but it is best if they are mounted on concrete.

The spacing between your fence posts will depend on the type of fence you are building. The recommended distance in between posts is 12-feet but you must also take into consideration the terrain on which the fence is being built. For instance, if the fence is being put up on a steep hill or a location where erosion often happens, additional steel fence posts are often necessary. Ensure that the posts are of the same height simply by using wood stakes, a Mason line, a pencil, and a tape measure. Bury some wood stakes in the places where the posts are to be positioned then tie the mason line across the stakes at 6″ above the ground. Using the Mason line as basis, mark your desired post height on each stake with a pencil, from the top of the post. Align the steel fence posts with the pencil marks as you install them.
