Coated Chain Link Fence
Why a Coated Chain Link Fence
Chain link fences are the toughest you could ever get with fences. They may not be exactly be as attractive as other fencing materials but if you are simply after a functional fence that can secure your yard and add a little bit of privacy, chain fences are the ideal choice. This type of fence is also popular as a temporary fencing option for it is easy to install and remove. For residential purposes, you may want to consider building a coated chain link fence.
Galvanized Vs CoatedChain link fences have four basic components: the fabric, framework, gates, and fittings. The fence may be galvanized before or after the mesh fabric is woven or welded. Galvanizing makes the material tougher and longer lasting. Coating chain link fences with vinyl AFTER the fabric has been galvanized makes it even stronger and much more resistant to rust and corrosion.
A chain link fence that has been galvanized PRIOR to being welded or woven carries superior quality. This type is much harder to find than chain fences that are galvanized after the welding or weaving process. You can also expect to pay more for them. It might not be as easy to tell the difference between the two because they have similar finish.
At the end of the day, opting for a coated chain link fence will prove to be a more cost-effective option. Vinyl-coated fencing may cost a little extra but it is sure to last longer than naked galvanized fencing. For the best quality, look for a vinyl-coated fence that has been galvanized before the mesh is woven or welded together. However, standard chain fences make decent fencing solutions in residential settings.
Chain Link Fence OptionsIn choosing the best quality coated chain link fence, you have to look at three things: the thickness and strength of the wire, the size of the mesh, and the type of protective coating.
Wire Gauge Wire gauge is measured by the diameter of the wire and the actual amount of steel in the fabric. Wire gauges range from 13 to 6, with 6 as the thickest, usually applied in industrial settings. For home fencing, a wire gauge of 11 to 9 would suffice.
Mesh Size The smaller the space between the parallel or diamond-shaped wires in the fencing fabric, the more steel the fence contains. Standard mesh sizes are 2 3/8″, 2 ¼”, and 2″. Smaller mesh sizes are available but they are more suitable for fencing sporting grounds and pool areas. Get the right mesh size to make sure that your fence serves its purpose – whether it is to keep children or animals in or out.
Coating Zinc is the most popular coating for chain link fences followed by aluminum. Zinc is applied in most galvanized fences as a protective element for steel. Aluminum is more of a barrier coating. A vinyl coated chain link fence is more appropriate for home fencing because it comes available in attractive colors that blend well with any surrounding area. Vinyl is a corrosion-resistant coating.
