Chain Fencing

An Overview on Chain Fencing

Options in Chain Fencing

Chain fencing is commonly seen in industrial areas, farms, warehouses, playgrounds, pool areas, parks, parking lots, and tennis courts but is also good for residential properties. Essentially, chain link fences are galvanized steel wire woven into a mesh. This net-like configuration is referred to as the “fabric” of the chain link fence. The woven mesh is secured around a specific area via steel posts, which are deeply entrenched into the ground.

Advantages Chain fencing is low cost, low maintenance, and highly functional. It is a versatile option that can be used in both residential and commercial set-ups. The low cost and the ease of installation makes it an instant fencing solution in almost any setting. Chain link fences are also useful for dog kennels and animal pens. They are also set up to temporarily secure construction sites.

Thickness and Diameter The thickness or gauge of the wire used determines how strong the chain fencing is. Most common gauge sizes usually range from nine to 11 – with 9-gauge being thickest wire and 11-gauge being the thinnest – but sizes may go higher or lower as needed. Chain link fences are also categorized by the diameter of the mesh, which is the size of the squares formed in between the interwoven wires. Larger meshes are normally used along with thicker wires.

Height and Length In the United States, the height of chain link fences available in the market range from 3′ to 12′, although anyone can set up a fence in whichever height he prefers. Chain fencing is sold in 20-rod and 50′ rolls or longer. The line posts to which the fabric is attached are implanted into the ground at varying intervals, taking into consideration the height and length of the fence.

Coating and Accessories Aside from the fabric and the posts, chain fencing also requires gates and some other optional fittings to be able to serve its purpose, which in most cases, is to add privacy and security to a property or complex. Protective, colored coating such as PVC vinyl may be applied on the fence. The vinyl is fused and bonded for a smooth finish, effectively protecting the fence from rust. Zinc and polyester coatings are also commonly used on chain link fences.

Although a chain fence may not be as visually appealing as vinyl or wrought iron fences, you can add beauty to it with the addition of slats, which are available in interesting colors. Slats may be added to give partial privacy at any time after the chain fence is constructed.

Chain Fencing Costs

Chain link fencing is the least expensive fencing option available, ideal for homeowners on a budget. Especially if you require a fence for a large space, a chain fence is just what you need whether for temporary and permanent use. Thicker chain link fences will cost a little higher for they are tougher and sturdier. Also, expect to spend a little more for vinyl-coated chain link fences. They usually cost twice or thrice as much standard chain fencing.
